PhysEmp: Since 1990, Helping Physicians Find New Opportunities

Did you know that PhysEmp started out as a magazine? Yep, that’s right. In 1990, our CEO, Robert Truog, published the first issue of Physicians Employment, a national guide listing positions in all medical specialties.

If you’ve been a practicing physician for 25 or more years, you might remember thumbing through the guide to read about the latest jobs across the country. Now, of course, paper is passé. How the times have changed!

Excellence in Healthcare: The Everett Clinic

Kelly Ulrich knows a thing or two about recruiting. During her 20-year history in the field, she’s recruited professionals for companies including Target, Philips Medical Systems, and—through Volt—Microsoft, Starbucks, Nordstrom, and Amazon.

Kelly Ulrich, a physician recruiter at The Everett Clinic.

In recent times, however, she’s shifted her focus to the healthcare industry. For the last year, she’s been a Provider Recruiter at The Everett Clinic in Washington State, where she sources Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Behavioral Health physicians, and Urgent Care doctors.

Progressive Leadership & Service

“I love the healthcare industry,” says Ulrich, “I wanted to grow in another area and I respect medicine and doctors a lot. The Everett Clinic is known as such a great place to work, and it really is a great organization with some of the best leadership I’ve ever seen in my decades of working.”

Founded in 1924, The Everett Clinic is a locally-owned and operated multi-specialty physician group practice providing comprehensive, community-wide healthcare to more than 300,000 patients in greater Snohomish County, Washington. The Everett Clinic’s team of more than 500 providers offer more than 40 specialty care services, including walk-in clinics, outpatient surgery centers, lab services, advanced imaging, a Behavioral Health Center, and more.

“Everett has always been a progressive organization, and they continue to innovate and grow,” says Ulrich, of the award-winning facility. “They have tremendous passion for their patients and employees. They say our secret sauce is our staff, and I believe that wholeheartedly.”

Excellent Work-Life Balance for Physicians

In a time when physician burnout is on the rise, Ulrich takes great pride in the fact that The Everett Clinic offers doctors a healthier workplace. In fact, the facility has been designated one of the nation’s “Top 100 Places to Work” for three years running.

“Not many places can say that,” Ulrich says. “Once physicians read about us and come and visit, I would say 95 percent of them end up signing a contract—mostly due to the workplace. The leadership team makes it a priority to take care of their employees. It’s part of their Core Values. Our physicians are given good benefits and a good competitive salary, along with excellent work/life balance.”

Award-Winning Facility, Warm Community

“Regionally, it really is a great community,” says Ulrich, “The people are kind and you can live really anywhere, as Everett is in the middle of map in terms of access to Seattle. But you can live in Seattle and have a reverse commute to come up here, which is very enticing to our providers and staff.”

Excellence in Physician Recruiting: Elsayyad Medical Group

Elsayyad Medical Group, LLC, puts empathy above all else when it comes to physician recruiting. And for good reason—one day its administrators will be doing physician rounds themselves.

EMG is the brainchild of Millennial dynamo Ahmed Elsayyad, a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University who will be starting Medical School at Mt. Sinai in New York this fall. His COO, Lamin Sonko, will graduate from Johns Hopkins this spring and is medical school-bound as well.

Physician Recruiting with Compassion

“EMG is primarily run by future doctors, and we really look out for the physicians that we help to recruit,” says Sonko. “We have genuine compassion for the individuals that we reach out to. We want to place them where their talents will be used and they’ll be most fulfilled.”

In its first year, EMG started off recruiting physicians in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area and quickly established a national reach. Today, they help physicians in all specialties find employment nationwide. In addition, the company offers its clients pharmaceutical procurement, medical supplies, and management consulting.

Tomorrow’s Physicians Recruiting Today’s Top Talent

What’s really fascinating about EMG is that its managers have one foot in the field of physician recruiting, and one in the field of medicine itself. Knowing the equation from both sides means that Sonko and Elsayyad can empathize with all parties involved.

“I think it’s really new in the recruitment field to have recruitment done by actual physicians, or aspiring physicians,” says Sonko. “A lot of times, the work is done by post-grads or masters students in some other field.”

When asked why he loves physician recruiting, Sonko says:

“Personally, I love the challenge of recruiting,” Sonko says, “I love working closely with people. I’m trained as a science investigator, and there’s not a whole lot of personal contact there. I’m a social person by nature, so I love the fact that recruiting relies on your ability to communicate effectively with others.”
